BRANDING
WHAT A BRAND BOOK IS ACTUALLY FOR
A brand book often ends up as a PDF that gets opened once, at the launch, and then sits in a shared drive. That is a shame, because its real value shows up months later, when someone new has to make something.
It is for the people who were not in the room
The designer you hire next year, the freelancer making a menu, the agency running your ads. None of them heard the thinking behind your logo or your colours. The book gives them the decisions and the reasons, so their work still looks like yours.
Rules, with examples
Good brand books show what to do and what not to do. A logo on a busy photo, a colour pair that fails on a phone screen, a tone of voice that drifts into sales talk. One wrong example teaches more than three paragraphs of description.
Keep it alive
Update it when you learn something. If a new type of post works, add it. If a rule keeps getting broken, ask why, then fix the rule or explain it better. A brand book that changes a little each year is one people still open.
