PAID ADS

WHY YOUR BEST AD IS RARELY YOUR PRETTIEST ONE

Runner crossing a street, motion blur

The ad that wins in the account is often not the one that won in the review meeting. Polished creative looks good on a laptop. On a phone, between a friend’s holiday and a news clip, it can read as an ad, and people scroll past ads.

What actually stops the scroll

The first second does most of the work. A face, a hand, a product in use, or a line of text that names the problem will usually beat a slow brand reveal. Movement helps. So does anything that looks like it was shot by a person rather than produced by a team.

Pretty still has a job

This is not a case against good-looking work. The brand film, the campaign photography and the website are where people decide whether you are worth paying. The ad’s job is narrower: get the right person to stop and tap. Judge each piece by its own job.

How we test

We make several versions of each idea, change one thing at a time, and let spend follow the results. The winner is often the rougher cut. We keep the polished version for the places it belongs.
